It was a perfect night for golf, as evidenced by the great play by everyone.  We had 10 of the 14 players shoot net par or better, and those over net par missed by just 1 or 2 strokes (except you Jim, sorry, looks like a tough night for you) . With most of us now having a full 6 weeks of play at the new course, the handicaps are starting to “normalize”, and, along with the improved play this week, we actually had 4 players lower their handicaps and only 3 that went up. The matches themselves also reflected how well everyone played, as no one player won more than 5 ½ holes, and 2 of those that lost, still managed to win their match’s bonus point. I say we deserve a group pat-on-the-back 😊

I’d also like to thank Lisa Palmerino for filling in this week on short notice.  Hopefully you enjoyed playing with us, and we look forward to having you as a sub again in the future.  We have several scheduled absences remaining, and there will be the odd unscheduled absence here-and-there as well, so, plenty of opportunities to fill in. Thanks again!

Now for the matches.

First up, we have our 5 ½ - 3 ½ winners, Dan Fusco and Tommy, taking down perennial powerhouse Gloria, and a struggling Jim. Dan led the entire round, Gloria had a chance to tie the match at the last hole, however, even a par would not have done the trick, as Dan put an exclamation point on the win with a birdie! Great round Dan!  In our other match, Jim and Tom kept it all square through the first 2 holes.  Tom started his run with a par on the 3rd, getting his lead to 4-up, and clinching the match at the 7th hole. Jim did manage to take the last 2 holes to avoid a rout.  Way to stay focused Jim!  Nice match gentlemen!

In the first of our four 5-4 matches, our lead-off twosome Brian and Matt were all square after the first hole. Brian then took the first full point at the 2nd hole. Three ½ points later he took his 2nd full point, followed by another ½ to guarantee at least a tie.  Matt took his first full point of the round at the 8th hole to keep hopes of a tie alive but, splitting the final hole gave the win the Brian.  Great match guys!

Next up was the match between Tim and Bette. All square though 2 holes, Tim went 1-up at the 3rd, only to fall back to square again at the 4th. This sequence was repeated again over the 5th and 6th holes.  Tim took a 1-up lead at the 7th, and, splitting the final 2 holes, held onto that lead for the win. Way to hang in there to the end Bette! Another close one!

Our 3rd 5-4 match was a straight-up, no-strokes match, as Dave and Paul slugged it out for the neighborhood bragging rights. Dave jumped out to the early 1-up lead at the first. Paul got it back to all square at the 3rd, and then held his own 1-up lead until Dave squared things back up at the 6th. Paul birdied the 7th to get back to 1-up, and then Dave got it back to even again at the 8th.  It all came down to the final hole, and Paul’s par did the trick, as Dave struggled at the end.  Still a nice round by both players, finishing net 34 and 36!

And, the last of the 5-4 matches was another no-strokes match between Bob and Lisa. It was another back-and-forth fight with Lisa drawing first blood at the 1st. Bob rallied over the next 2 holes to go 1-up, but Lisa got it back to all-square again at the 4th. At the 7th hole, Bob got it to 2-up and guaranteed himself at least a tie, then clinched the win with a ½ point at the 8th. Lisa then took the final hole with a bogey to Bob’s double. Another great round with nets of 37 and 36!

Last, but not least, was the match of Dan P., and Andy. After tying the first hole, it was 1-up for Dan at the 2nd, followed by all-square, and 1-up again for Dan at the 4th. Andy squared it up again at the 5th and went on to 1-up and then 2-up through the 7th. A win-win for Dan at the final 2 holes left match all square at the end.  Great match!

NEW for 2023

Knockout Champion

Thanks to a lot of early knockouts, the winning point total was pretty low this week, as Tim outlasted everyone, making it to the 6th hole for the 5-point pick-up.  Nice round Tim!

Eagles and Birdies

Along with the good play we saw from everyone, there was a plethora of birdies this week.

#5 – Tim, Andy

#7 – Paul

#9 Dan Fusco

Closest-to-the-pin

Several players hit the green close, but, none closer than Dan Fusco.  Nice shot Dan (I don’t see a birdie on that hole for you though, what happened?)
