All right then, despite a few false starts and other little glitches, our first week at Eagle Crest came off pretty well. The weather was great! The course is in good shape for early in the season, and everyone seemed to have had a good time.
Just a quick reminder, a few folks indicated that they had some future dates that they were not going to be playing, please send me an email with that info please. I cannot rely on my memory from around the table 😊
The top point earners on the night were Matt and Andy, both with 3-up, 6-3 wins over Gloria and Bob, respectively. Both had 4-up leads thru the 15th hole. Gloria managed to knock the lead down to 2-up thru the 17th hole, but Matt gained one back at the final hold for the 6-3 win plus the bonus point. Meanwhile, Bob reduced Andys lead to 3-up thru the 16th hole, where it remained till the end.
(CORRECTION) Pete was the 5-4 winner over Tommy, rather than the previously reported win attributed to Tom. It was actually Pete jumping out to an early lead, letting Tom back into the match briefly as they squared back up on the 2nd hole. Pete then ran 3-in-a-row to go 3-up thru the 14th and 15th. Tom fought back at the end to go from 3-down to just 1 down and the loss. Pete also took the bonus point for a 6-point total. Nice match gentlemen! Great to have you back in action Pete!
Two matches finished 5 ½ - 3 ½, starting with Brian vs Bette. It started out looking like a close one, remaining all square after 1, as Brian took the 2nd hole to go 1-up, and then Bette getting it back to all square at the 12th hole. Brian turned it up a notch, taking the next 3 holes to go 3-up. Bette cut into the lead slightly at the 16th, but Brian held on for the 2-up win and the full bonus point in the end.
In the other match, Tim was matching cards with Andy who jumped out to an early 3-up lead. Tim whittled away at the lead, getting the match 2-up at the 13th, then 1-up at the 16th. Par for Andy at the final hole put the lead back to 2-up for the 5 ½ - 3 ½ , and denied Tim the bonus point. Nice match Tim!
Newcomer Dan Palmerino came up big on the night (see Hacker Cup standings and the new Knockout challenge below) with a wire-to-wire win over veteran sub Joe, getting to 3-up thru the 14th. Joe managed to lessen the blow, taking the final 2 holes to finish just 1-down in the 5-4 match with Dan taking the full bonus point. Welcome to the Hackers Dan! Nice round!
Our first week also featured our first family match-up, as cousins Dan and Jim went head-to-head in a no-strokes nail-biter. Dan pulled out in front early, getting to 3-up thru the first 4 holes. At that point, Jim decided to join the match, taking back one at the par 3 14th. Dan held that 2-up lead for 2 more holes, before Jim took the last 2 to tie-up the match at the finish. It was a split all the way as they also shared the bonus point. Nice round guys!
Sticking with the tied matches, Dave and Sue ended up knotted, with Dave also taking an early 2-up lead. Sue fought back quickly, taking one back at the 13th, and then again at the 16th after Dave regained a 2-up lead at the prior hole. Finally, a win at the 18th clinched the tie, with Sue snagging the full bonus point! Way to hang with the reigning champ Sue!
The early Hacker Cup lead goes to one of our newest members, As Dan Palmerino took solo first-place points with his net 38. Nice round Dan!

Knockout Champion
In the new Knockout competition, once again, its newcomer Mr. Palmerino, hanging in there till the 16th hole for 6 points and the lead. Along with the lead comes the honor of carrying the gloves next week.
