Well, once again, we have racked up another week of Hacker golf, thanks to some warm, dry weather. The only blemish on the night was when Grace took ill on the 8th hole. We’re all thinking of you, Grace, and hoping for the best! Hope you get better soon!
With last week off for the scramble, we return to action with a renewed sense of hope and purpose… Well, that sounds good, doesn’t it? 😊 Every match had a winner, as there were no ties. 3 players improved their handicaps while 2 went up a stroke.
Our longest-serving Hacker, Bob, was the top scorer tonight, holding opponent Susan to 1 ½ points. This places Bob in the top-5 of both the league standings and the race for the Hacker Cup! Talk about longevity!
Next up, with 7-2 wins, were Pete “I don’t care if she IS my wife” Michalski over Sue, and Andy vs Mark. Andy jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, as Mark struggled to find his rhythm. The next 4 holes were split, with Andy making birdie at the 9th to close out the match. There were no halves in the “Marital Matchup” of the week, as Pete took all but the 3rd and 5th holes, on his way to victory (and possibly the doghouse). Way to hang in there Sue! (NOTE: I did also have to make a correction to Sue’s handicap, which was incorrectly recorded on the card as a 20. It made no difference in the match result as originally calculated on the card).
In a last-minute sub for Steve Fusco, Gloria, continuing to show the form she revealed last week in the scramble, came out on top, 6 ½ - 2 ½ over Bette, who struggled a bit, shooting almost 4 strokes above her average for the front 9.
Jim bested Dave 6-3, in another match with 4 tied holes, but just one full point hole for Dave. Jim is proving himself to be real Hacker material, as he now leads in the league standings, and is #3 in the race for the Hacker Cup!
Tom and Marty were our 5 ½ - 3 ½ winners tonight. The match of Tom and Dan was a close one, as they were tied up at the 3rd, and again at the 7th. But Tommy struck Dan a deadly blow with a birdie at number 8 and held on for a bogey at the final hole to take the match. Nice round Tom! Meanwhile, Marty put up a nearly flawless round, shooting even par up until the final hole. Jumping out to an early 3-0 run, he never let Tim back in the match, guaranteeing the win by the 6th hole. Tough break Tim, catching Marty on a good night (not that he has many bad ones…).
It was Mark’s turn to finally achieve the dreaded “other”. This leaves just Marty as the only remaining player without one. Now the question is, can he go the entire season. If this week’s round is any indication, I wouldn’t bet against him. Great playing, as usual Marty!
As we enter the 2nd half of the season, there wasn’t a lot of movement in the standings. Jim, Marty, Tom and Steve F, each held onto their spots, 1,2,3 & 4, while Bob moved from 9th place, into a tie for 5th with Steve L, who moved up from 6th, nudging Tim down into the #7 spot. Next week, many players will hit that magic number of 10 matches, and we will start to see some movement in the standings as we start to lose those low-hanging points. Good luck to all!
And, again, Marty and Tom held on to the top 2 spots. Jim jumped up from 7th place into 3rd, moving Bob, Dave and Tim each down one spot. Just 2 more weeks until the play-offs and the re-seeding of points.
36 – Marty
38 – Jim, Andy
42 – Mark, Dan
30 – Gloria
33 – Jim, Andy
34 – Marty, Tom
There was a plethora of birdies out there tonight, 5 of them, spread around on 4 separate holes, and 2 of them to Jim,
who now leads in the birdies-per-round category, carding a birdie, on average, once every 7 holes played!
#5 – Jim
#6 – Gloria
#8 – Jim, Tom
#9 - Andy
Andy finally hit the green at number 5, putting it 10’ 8” directly above the hole.
