Following the delayed start to the season because of “you-know-what”, week number one is in the books! It was a great afternoon for golf as far as weather goes. Let’s hope our Fridays remain weather-worry-free for the rest of the season, otherwise we may be finishing up with snow on the ground…
Most of the matches were fairly close, with veteran Hacker Bob taking top points on the night with a 6 ½ - 2 ½ win over a struggling Bette.
In the first of our seven “family feud” match-ups, despite Susan jumping out to a 2-1 lead, Steve prevailed in the end winning 5 ½ - 3 ½ . Steve Fusco and Andy rounded out the 5 ½ point winners in their matches against Grace and Pete, respectively. Pete and Andy had a close match going, with 5 tied holes thru the first 6, but the final 3 holes took their toll on Pete, leading to the win for Andy.
The other half of team Michalski fared much better as Sue jumped out to an early 4-1 lead over Dave, then, slowed down a bit, but still took 2 more ½ points to close out the win 5-4 ! Nice round Sue! The match of Tim vs Dan was another close one, with 4 tied holes, including the final hole, which sent the win to Tim. Well fought gents! Our final 5-4 win went to a supposedly injured Tommy, defeating Mark while posting one of the 2nd lowest nets of the day. If you’ll forgive me the political jab, if I were to think like our POTUS, I might recommend falling down some stairs to improve your golf game…
The remaining match of Marty and Jim was clearly a close one, with 5 tied holes. Marty made a run at the end winning16 and 17, but Jim birdied the final hole to clinch the tie. Great finish under pressure Jim!
Tales from the noodle….
I can only attest to what was seen in our foursome, so, if anyone else would care to share observations, pass them along, and I will add them here.
As you know, the on-the-spot rule was determined that if the ball made contact with the noodle, it was deemed to be holed. This proved very advantageous to Sue on the 2nd hole, as her 4th shot, from just in front of the green, hit the noodle squarely, and proceeding to pop straight up in the air (some say a few inches, other several feet 😊 ) We also had at least one “grazing” of the noodle, resulting in a holing out.
The hardest part of the night was missing post-round socializing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that the restrictions governing that will be changing any time soon. We will need to make due with the pre-round gathering for now I think, to catch up and chit-chat a bit.
Bob and Steve Fusco led way tonight, sharing top net honors, followed by Tom, Marty and Tim, sharing 2nd spot, while Mark and Jim rounded out the top 3 nets.
40 – Mark, Marty
43 – Jim, Andy
46 – Dan
34 – Bob, Steve F.
36 – Tom, Marty, Tim
37 – Mark, Jim
The par fives gave up 3 birdies tonight.
16 – Marty
18 – Jim and Steve F.
The only mark on the green was Steve Fusco, unfortunately, it was a couple of feet outside of the requisite 25’. Without a measuring tape, a heel-toe pace off was used. The length of the shoe used, was later confirmed to be exactly 12”. Sorry Steve.
